1. Leave the kids at home!
Trying to save money in the supermarket takes time and concentration, two things you don't often have with kids around. Leave them at home and shop with a clear head.  They also tend to ask (or whine) for extra treats that quickly increase your food bill!

2. Unpackage, unprocessed
Buying fruit and veg whole, package free and unprocessed saves money at the checkout. Bags of washed cut lettuce may be convenient but they will cost you more and you'll likely get less in a bag than you would a head of lettuce.  Can you bake your own cookies? I know it takes time, but bulk baking and freezing the extras will save you  money.

3.Discount cards and coupons.
Get a store discount card if available. Same with using coupons, but don't be drawn into buying food you wouldn't normally buy. This is not saving but costing you extra if you woudn't have bought it otherwise.

4.Buy in season
Fruits and vegetables taste their best in season and are also at their cheapest. A win both ways!

5. Shop on a full stomach.
Its the same advice for dieters. Never shop on an empty stomach, you'll buy more, you won't look at the price tags and it probably won't be healthy!

6.Avoid brand names
Try budget brand items if you can. Some can be just as tasty as brand names. Often different brands are made in the same factory, and all that's different is the packaging and price.  Try comparing  the calories, fat and protein labels on the box, if these are identical it's a good chance there's no difference in the two products.   Don't stick with cheaper varieties if you don't like them though, they may be poorer quality. Buy the more expensive item but make it go further. For example try a better quality sausage in a spaghetti sauce but make it go further with more pasta and freeze what sauce you don't use for another time.

7.Freeze everything
You will be amazed at what you can successfully freeze.  Tomatoes getting a bit soft? Freeze what you would have otherwise thrown out and use them in a pasta sauce later. This way you don't throw money down the drain and save on store bought sauces too.  Get a book on freezing from your local library and freeze what would otherwise be thrown out. Not everything will be a success but you'll save money.
8.Get more for your money
If apples are priced by weight - buy smaller ones. the same number will cost you less.  If they are priced per item buy the largest ones and split one between the kids / you and your partner.
9.Shop Online.
Even if you are super organised and remember to take your shopping list with you, you may still be unable to avoid temptation browsing down the food aisles.  This is where internet shopping can help.  If you spend some time you can also use it to compare prices at different stores.

9.Shop Around.
Getting all your shopping in one place doesn't always make sense.  Often you will find better prices at the local butcher or fruit and veg store.

Happy Shopping!
