1.Compare fuel prices

The first step to saving money on fuel is to shop around to find the cheapest fuel in your area. For a US fuel price comparison click here.

2. Know when to fill up
Most drivers fill their tank on a friday and as a result many petrol stations put their prices up then. Get in before the rush and save.
3.Cut out short trips
Ok, this is an obvious one - of course you'll save money on fuel if you don't use the car.  But did you know that all those short trips use more fuel as the engine doesn't have time to warm up properly. So walking those short distances will save you money on the most expensive trips.

4.Fuel economy
If you drive economically you'll go further on more fuel, but what do we mean by driving more economically:

  1. Lose the extra weight. Get rid of everything you don't need from the boot and remove any roof racks.
  2. Check your tire pressure. Correctly inflated tires save money as they give less drag.
  3. Fill up early. Its better for your car and it means that you'll have time shop around to find the nearest gas station before you run out.

5.AC v's open windows

Which uses more fuel? Air conditioning or open windows?  Well, it depends on the speed you are going but generally ac will use up 10% more fuel while open windows (because of the increased drag) will use up 25% more. So, if its a hot sunny day and have to cool down in the car, AC is better.

6.Car share.
Get to know your co workers. Who lives near you?  Car sharing to save 50% or more of fuel is a great idea - better for your wallet and better for the environment.
