1. What to drink
Before we get to what food to pack in the lunch box we need to consider drinks. Much as kids love sweet or fizzy juice, it just isn't right for their school  lunch options. Water or diluted unsweetened fruit juice is best.  Choose a wide mouth drink bottle that is easy to get ice cubes into and easy to  clean. A hard plastic bottle is also good, water in soft plastic bottles often tastes of the container.

2.  Food groups
The perfect lunch box will contain some of each of the basic food groups, ie carbs, protein, dairy, and fruit and veg.   Carbs such as wholemeal breads and cereals will maintain a steady GI and be digested slowly, helping your kid to concentrate better in the classroom.  Proteins include meat, fish, eggs, nuts cheese, lentils etc.  Check out your schools policy on taking nuts into the classroom before including in the lunchbox.

3.The sweet tooth
Like most people, kids have a sweet tooth, and it's ok to include a little of what they fancy in the lunch box.  Its best that their sweet tooth is indulged with  options like  raisins, apricots, figs etc.

4. Lunch is fun!
Even kids who insist on the same sandwich every day get bored if there is no variety. The lunch box is a great area to try something new, often they'll eat it because there's no alternative. They can't nag mum into making something else and if their friend has something similar, that's another incentive to try something new.  Make fruit kebabs on a stick instead of adding a boring old apple. Swap sandwiches for rice or pasta, add tuna and sweetcorn and you've included three of the main food groups in one dish!

5. Finger foods
Kids like eating with their hands so incorporate finger foods into the lunch box.  Berries, carrot sticks, cheese chunks, pita chips, cherry tomatoes, the list is endless.
