2 Fruit and Veg Fruit and vegetables are great sources of antioxidants which mop up damaging free radicals and high antioxidant diets have been shown to improve cognitive skills.Of the vegetable, broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts and cauliflower are great brain food. All fruits are good but berries such as strawberries and blueberries have been shown to have the best effect. 3 Glucose To keep your brain working at its best throughout the day, it needs a steady supply of glucose. This is not the green light to start snacking on sugary foods though. Complex carbohydrates are needed to stop you getting onto that high-low sugar seesaw. For example a great start to the day would be a breakfast of wholegrain toast and marmite. Healthy mid-afternoon snacks may also be needed to keep glucose levels steady. |
4. Water Keeping your body hydrated prevents headaches and long term dehydration elevates stress levels and is linked to neuron damage. 5. Eggs Eggs are great food for the brain as they are rich in choline which is used by the body to produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter. Low levels of acetylcholine are associated with Alzheimers disease and some studies have shown that increasing dietary intake can slow age related memory problems. Have an omelette and salad for lunch and you get the choline from the eggs as well as all the beneficial antioxidants from the salad |
6. Yoghurt Yoghurt contains tyrosine, an amino acid needed for making dopamine, noradrenaline and other brain chemicals. Tyrosine levels are reduced under stress and increasing tyrosine intake can improve alertness and memory. Why not add some berries to your youghurt snack to boost the effect. 7. Junk Food No Sorry, junk food doesn't improve your memory. It is mentioned here, of course, because of the huge detrimental effect that junk food has on the brain. Researchers in San Diego fed rats and mice the rodent equivalent of junk food and noticed that they struggled to make their way round a maze and took longer to remember solutions to problems they had already solved. Junk food as been associated with a range of mental disorders including ADHD, dyslexia and autism. Diets high in fatty foods and low on fruit and veg have been linked to depression and aggression. On the positive side, dark chocolate is a good source of brain boosting antioxidants and a small amount can be included in a health diet. |
