1. Eldest childThe eldest
child may also
have spent a good time being the only child, the longer this is, the
more
they will gravitate towards only child characteristics. First borns
are thought to be more conscientious, and ambitious, good
listeners, moralistic, anxious, and controlling.
2. Second childIf the youngest of two, the second child always has an older sibling who is more advanced and will race to catch up or overtake the first child. Can be rebellious and can push down later siblings. The second child doesn't know where they stand when the third child is born as they are no longer the baby.3. Middle childThe middle child has great mediation skills, are very adaptible and giving. May feel life is unfair, and may even feel unloved or forgotten. Tends to have the most negative impressions of his lot in life. |
4. Youngest
child The youngest child can be easy going, pleasant, creative, and either feels that they are incapable of doing things that the older siblings can do and therefore takes less responsibility or can be more competitive and rush to beat the older siblings accomplishments. The youngest child often feels that they are not taken seriously. 5. Only childThe only child can be weighed down by parental expectations, and feel incompetent as they are not as capable as adults. He / she can be very creative with a great imagination. The only child can be self centred or spoiled, feeling unfairly treated if they don't get their own way.The only child is confident around other children but may not relate to their peers very well who may appear too child like to them. The only child may wish to be an adult. |
6.
Birth order and career choices
The eldest child and the only child 'appear' to have a higher IQ than the middle and youngest child. (some studies have indicated this yet others have contradicted it) They have high expectations and tend to do well in their careers and are good at taking reponsiblity. Over half of all US presidents were first borns. The middle child often does well in caring careers or as part of a team. 7. Birth order and confidence. It is easy to understand that in a family where the eldest child is given more responsibility and perhaps taken more seriously than subsequent children that they might have a greater confidence in themselves and their abilities. Second and youngest children if they are considered the babies of the family and used to getting assistance in completing tasks may also suffer from lack of confidence in their abilities. On the positive side subsequent children may have a wider comfort zone than first borns and their confidence can be greater in social situations. 8. Perspective. As we are all individuals, birth order can never be used to predict a childs behavious or personality but it can be helpful in understanding a childs perceptions of himself and his place in the family. A knowledge of birth order can also help us moderate our behaviour towards our children so that any negative birth order traits can be minimised or eliminated.
